After graduating in Mathematics from Warwick University in 2005, Rudi has worked in the financial markets, including in Connecticut, USA and London, UK with RBS, with an emphasis on his data modelling and analysis skills. Amongst his responsibilities, Rudi structured and executed derivatives for the bank’s large corporate clients.
More recently, Rudi joined City, operating from London and Edinburgh, in a senior role to develop and lead its software-enabled corporate and fund services offering.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Do what is right, not what is easy.
Difficult problems present themselves in various guises daily. It is a strength of character which leads us to do the right thing even when there are more comfortable and accessible options.
What’s your favourite book and why?
The book I am currently enjoying reading is The Design of Everyday Things by the cognitive engineer, Don Norman.
As noted in Step 3, Improve, of City Software’s approach to development, reimagining a business process is the biggest challenge. While Don Norman’s book is not software-related, it stresses the importance of keeping the user in mind. Usability trumps feature-rich, always. The minimum effective solution is the goal.
If you had to delete all but 3 apps from your phone, which ones would you keep?
On the assumption that I can still make/receive calls and send text messages, I would keep the following apps:
- An email client which accommodates various account types;
- A password and secure note manager; and
- A web browser.
If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or into the future?
The future. I would be fascinated to learn whether or not another millennium of intellectual rigour was sufficient to topple today’s great known unknowns of science and mathematics.
